Salinity is a major factor controlling the distribution of biota in aquatic systems, and most aquatic multicellular organisms are either adapted to life in saltwater or freshwater conditions. Consequently, the saltwater-freshwater mixing zones in coastal or estuarine areas are characterized by limited faunal and floral diversity. Although changes in diversity and decline in species richness in brackish waters is well documented in aquatic ecology, it is unknown to what extent this applies to bacterial communities. Here, we report a first detailed bacterial inventory from vertical profiles of 60 sampling stations distributed along the salinity gradient of the Baltic Sea, one of world's largest brackish water environments, generated using 454 pyrosequencing of partial (400 bp) 16S rRNA genes. Within the salinity gradient, bacterial community composition altered at broad and finer-scale phylogenetic levels. Analogous to faunal communities within brackish conditions, we identified a bacterial brackish water community comprising a diverse combination of freshwater and marine groups, along with populations unique to this environment. As water residence times in the Baltic Sea exceed 3 years, the observed bacterial community cannot be the result of mixing of fresh water and saltwater, but our study represents the first detailed description of an autochthonous brackish microbiome. In contrast to the decline in the diversity of multicellular organisms, reduced bacterial diversity at brackish conditions could not be established. It is possible that the rapid adaptation rate of bacteria has enabled a variety of lineages to fill what for higher organisms remains a challenging and relatively unoccupied ecological niche.

An HIV transmission model indicated that, along the HIV care continuum, transmissions arise from persons with HIV infection who have not received a diagnosis or who have a diagnosed infection that is not controlled.

Methods: A model was used to estimate transmission rates in 2016 along the HIV continuum of care. Data for sexual and needle-sharing behaviors were obtained from National HIV Behavioral Surveillance. Estimated HIV prevalence, incidence, receipt of care, and viral suppression were obtained from National HIV Surveillance System data.

CDC updated the Progression and Transmission of HIV (PATH 2.0) model to estimate 2016 U.S. transmission rates by step along the HIV care continuum, population risk group, and age group (9). Mutually exclusive population risk groups included 1) men who have sex with men (MSM), 2) persons who inject drugs (men and women), 3) MSM who inject drugs, and 4) heterosexual men and women. PATH 2.0 tracked persons with HIV infection and their stage of disease (as measured by viral load and CD4 counts) as they moved along the HIV care continuum. Persons formed main and casual sexual partnerships as well as injection partnerships, with chances of transmission determined by sexual behaviors, injection risk behaviors, partnership preference, and viral load suppression status. Transmissions were tracked weekly in the acute stage (up to 3 months after HIV infection) and monthly thereafter. Persons newly infected with HIV were incorporated into the model.

The overall estimated HIV transmission rate in 2016 was 3.5 new infections per 100 person-years (Table). The rates of transmission decreased with progression along the HIV continuum of care. Persons who were acutely infected and unaware of their infection had the highest transmission rate (16.1), followed by persons who were non-acutely infected and unaware (8.4), those aware of their HIV infection but not in care (6.6), and those receiving HIV care but not virally suppressed (6.1). The rate was zero among those taking ART and virally suppressed. The percentage of all transmissions generated by each group was 4.0%, 33.6%, 42.6%, 19.8%, and 0%, respectively (Figure 1).

Applicants for the Ride-Along Program must complete a written application and meet the minimum standards set by policy. A criminal background check will be completed for all applicants. Community members should submit their application at least three weeks in advance of the desired ride-along date. The application is available below or it can be obtained at the Public Safety Building.

The Dunwoody Police Department is committed to establishing and maintaining close ties with citizens and promoting a realistic understanding of how community needs are being addressed by the department. A ride-along program is a great way to do this.

At times, it is very difficult to explain to people the exact duties of a police officer and the complex nature of the job. Giving citizens the opportunity to ride along with an officer is very eye-opening. -Police Chief Billy Grogan

A ride-along is a great way to learn about sheriff's office operations. You may accompany a deputy on a day, evening or night shift. Ride alongs show citizens the day-to-day challenges facing law enforcement officers. The experience also demonstrates the critical role that dispatchers and other communications personnel play in ensuring citizen and officer safety.

Riders may join deputies as they patrol their districts in the south, north or mountain areas of the county. Ride alongs begin with patrol briefing at headquarters before deputies go out on the road for the duration of their shift.

EFFECTIVE MARCH 18, 2020: To avoid unnecessary in-person contact, ride-along and sit-along programs with patrol and dispatch units have been suspended. This is a temporary interruption and we will update this page when regular services resume.

To request a ride along with an officer, applicants must complete and print out the Ride Along Program Application (make sure to check the Ride Along Request box) and mail the completed application to:

Applicants shall apply at least two weeks in advance of the ride along date so records checks and scheduling can be accommodated. We make every effort to process the applications in a timely manner. However, due to the large number of applicants, the ride along notification may be delayed. You will be contacted by a member of our staff once the application has been processed.

The UCDPD is excited to offer the opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and non-university affiliated community members to ride alongside police officers on patrol. This unique program is intended to be a learning experience both for participants and for police officers. Participants will be able to ask officers questions and observe law enforcement first-hand while the officer performs his/her duties throughout Davis.

Members of the community may ride along with uniformed Hayward police officers while they perform their shift patrol duties. Through a ride along, the public gets an opportunity to meet individual police officers and to see, first-hand, how police officers do their job. While Hayward residents are given priority in participating in ride alongs, Hayward residence is not a requirement for participation.

Ride Along Application and Waiver/GuidelinesMail or deliver the required forms, at least 10 working days before your desired ride along date, to:Hayward Police Department300 West Winton AvenueHayward, CA 94544Attention: Community Policing - Ride Along Coordinator

Additionally, applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Approved applicants may ride along no more than once every six months, and ride-alongs are always limited to four consecutive hours. Additional requirements and restrictions apply.

During your ride along, you may observe deputies interact and work with citizens or business owners/employees to help solve problems in the respective neighborhood areas. You might also see patrol deputies work together with Sheriffs Office specialized units including the Traffic Unit, the Crime Reduction Unit, the K-9 or Mounted Unit and at times, even the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team to solve issues throughout El Paso County, promoting our Community Policing philosophy. 2ff7e9595c
